7 Ways to Bust Blocks in Your Life and Get Un-Stuck

Earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, unfathomable loss of lives, radiation leaks that have already reached New York, 3 wars in the Middle East, under and un-employment, cost of living sky-rocketing, anger, fear and distrust at an all time high -- do you think there are villains running rampant throughout our lives? You bet there are! So, what's a well-meaning person, trying to keep his or her life together, to do? Bust some blocks!

First, What is a Block?

A block is any thought or emotion that is STUCK in your brain and that pops up sub-consciously to stop you in your tracks. Most often you are unaware of the block. It usually represents a disappointment, a broken heart experience, a loss, a failure -- some experience that you decided to bury and perhaps deal with at a later date.

Blocks keep you from getting what you want out of life. Blocks keep you stuck in habits, patterns, routines and behaviors that are not working for you. These are the elusive things that you would like to change about yourself if you could just define it, find it, get your hands around it, understand it, express it. You can be blocked personally or blocked as an organization or a business.

Find Your Block

Here are some examples of blocks and their associated villains:

• THE SABOTEUR: You can't seem to finish anything. You have a ton of wonderful ideas, but none of them completely come to fruition. I call it chain-doubting -- whether it's too expensive, too complicated, too time-consuming, or too whatever, you just can't get it done.

• THE PIRATE/BANDIT: You always seem to be lacking the one thing you need to get what you want -- whether it's more information, more money, more luck, more help, more time -- there's always something missing. Everybody else has it, but not you.

• THE SORCERESS: You are always stuck waiting for something to happen before you take action. If __________ happens then I'll do it. If I lose weight, then I'll look for a job. If my prince comes then I'll find love. If my break comes, then I'll succeed.

• THE KILLER: You feel like no one believes in you. You live in the past, completely cut off from your future. You might say things like, "I've failed before, why should this be any different? Who do I think I am? Your self-confidence and joy for life are at an all time low.

• THE MUGGER: You feel like you're an imposter -- that you're fooling people for a short time, but you will be caught. Someone will find you out and stop you. They will lower the boom or the ceiling on your life.

• THE MONSTER: You are absolutely sure that everyone else has the power. They make the decisions and pull the strings. You are just a pawn, a helpless and hopeless victim when it comes to bucking the system or even just breaking through.

• THE LOST LOVE: You're afraid to go after your dream, leave your job, believe in yourself or go after what you really love. When it gets right down to it -- you're afraid to love.

7 Ways to Bust Those Blocks

1. FIND THEM. You can't bust through the blocks unless you know what they are. When you feel stuck, ask yourself, "What do I think is blocking me?"

2. INDULGE IN SOME CHAIN-COMPLAINING. Once you have found your villain, try to identify who taught you to feel or act that way then, let yourself complain a bit. Feel it, write about it, shout it out and...

3. LET IT GO! When the tirade is done, let it go. Once you've identified the perpetrators of your block and your chain complainin' is done, you can give it back to them, and move on to the final step which is one of empowerment. Write down the opposite of the doubting statements in your mind.

4. THROW OUT THE CAN'T, BRING ON THE CAN AND WON'T.
Make a new list or script:
I am talented enough... I can do this. I won't fall into your belief system.

5. BREATHE YOUR WAY OUT OF THE BLOCK: The very act of breathing, getting rid of the old to make room for the new, is actually a metaphor for what you need to do to free yourself from any block. You need to breathe out the old, foul thinking, doubts and saboteurs that have your brain locked in blank mode, and breathe in new creative thoughts and inspirations. You want to breathe out the garbage and breathe in the muse.

6. MEDITATE YOUR WAY OUT OF BLOCKS: When we are blocked, we must take our intense concentration off of that which is blocking us and put it somewhere else. Sit on the floor or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and breathe deeply for about 30 seconds. Ask yourself these questions -- "What do I need to do to find and release this block? What is my body trying to tell me?" Then, listen for 20 minutes. Let the thoughts come and go through your brain. Do not act or react. When the 20 minutes is up, slowly open your eyes and you will most likely have the answers you seek, or you will be given the answers sometime within the day.

Baby Boomers - How Reading Can Keep You Mentally Fit

As more and more baby boomers approach their senior years, they often share with me their concerns about dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other mental disabilities.    They often want to know, “is there anything I can do to stay mentally fit as I grow older?”  Fortunately the answer is yes.    Let me give you the details.

Two important studies on the mental deterioration associated with aging were conducted years ago.  The studies were called “The Baltimore and Seattle Longitudinal Studies On Aging,” and what they discovered provides the answer to the problem you are seeking.   The studies analyzed individuals who were 80 years old or older.  You are going to like what it revealed.

The story showed that people who read books on a regular basis had a much lower frequency of both dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.    While the frequent reading of books did not cure Alzheimer’s it did slow down its progression.  The same was true with dementia.    More interesting was the fact the individuals who hadn’t been reading were able to reap these benefits by starting on a regular reading program.   Here is the reason why they believe this occurs.

If you are over thirty years old, then your brain is losing thousands of neurons every day.  This is a normal part of aging.   When your approaching eighty then years of losing neurons can begin to affect your memory.  However, people who read books stimulated their brains.   This extra stimulation made the existing neurons form more connections.  Connections that helped to compensate for the neurons that were lost.  As a result they had better mental acuity even at advanced ages.

What is the lesson to be learned from this?  If you are a baby boomer and you want to keep your brain mentally fit, then you need to exercise it regularly.   The best exercise is to continually read as you grow older.  Your brain will reward you for doing this by staying focused and sharp as you grow older.

Choosing Your Mantra

Mantra has been defined as “a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation”. The power of a mantra is the power to create our own destiny. Ancient cultures have used mantras for thousands of years. Wayne Dyer in his “Meditations for Manifestation” CD talks about variations of the same sound found in countless religions: RAM, GOD, ALLAH, BUDDHA all share the ahhhhhhh sound when repeated slowly. These sounds have been repeated over thousands of years by millions of people, they have taken on a force that you connect with when you repeat them in your living room. There is power in sound and there is great power in our words, which is why mantras can be so instrumental in changing our perceptions and belief systems.

Repetition has been noted throughout clinical psychology as a powerful tool for molding the mind; one example is from the infamous Pavlov’s dog. Science has shown us that repetition creates a conditioned response in animals, so why not in human beings? We are not too complicated a species to be able to train ourselves into a positive conditioned response. If someone tells us we are stupid and invaluable each and every day, we can rest assured, it will merely be a matter of time before we believe it to be true. There is one surgeon who believed that it took 21 days for an amputee to adjust to the loss of a limb, Dr. Maxwell Maltz in 1960, from which the 21-day myth of creating a habit came from. We don’t have to think of it as a myth, the mind is extremely malleable. Think of the possibilities. In this age of self-made, you-tube celebrities the only thing keeping us from our destiny is the belief that we are what we think we are, just ask Charlie Sheen or the piano playing hamster.

Choosing the right words is just as important as the repetition aspect of performing mantras. It has to feel right, that is the number one rule. If you choose a mantra that is in another language like Sanskrit, a popular Tibetan one “Om Mani Padme Hum” for example has to have a ring to it for you, if it’s too hard to say and trips you up find one that rolls off the tongue smoothly. If you choose a self-made mantra for example, “I receive love and abundance daily” – make sure that feels right. It doesn’t have to feel true YET – we can aspire to our mantra, that’s the whole point to repeat, repeat, and repeat until words seem superfluous because we FEEL the embodiment of what we are saying and feeling is just one step before manifestation. Try to make your dreams a reality with mantras and see if you can manifest the words you speak.

Tips

Get some mala beads; they make it easy to focus on your mantra without having to watch a clock.

Choose a sacred time each day; it only has to be 5-20 minutes long, the earlier the better because it sets a great tone for your day

Catch and Release- once you have done your mantra, let go and allow the changes to take place don’t hammer away at it all day you will both bore and discourage yourself (doing it that much sends the message that you don’t trust).

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Take slow, deep breaths through your nose.  Feel the air flow over your top lip into your nostrils.  Feel the hair on your skin move slightly to the gentle current created by the inhales.

Green Pet Care

We are all making efforts these days to be friendlier to the planet.  And while Fido is not always friendly to your rose bushes, there are plenty of eco-friendly ways for you to help reduce your pet’s carbon paw print.

Clean Up

Pet waste can be harmful to the environment if not properly managed.  Always clean up after your pet, whether in public spaces or your own backyard.  It helps prevent potent toxins and bacteria from entering drainage systems.  There are even biodegradable pet waste bags now on the market.

Adopt

Overpopulation of pets is an unfortunate reality, which also impacts the environment.  Spaying or neutering your pet is a responsible way to help combat this issue.  Adoption from a local shelter is another earth-friendly solution.  There are plenty of existing animals in need of proper care in loving homes.

Check Ingredients

Investigate the ingredients of your pet’s food and treats.  If there are hard-to-pronounce ingredients on the nutrition label, chances are your pet’s food uses chemical additives or by-products.  Chemicals can have harmful effects on both the earth and your pooch.  Consider switching to an all-natural product, with few ingredients.  For an even greener makeover, investigate the company to find out where the product’s ingredients are sourced.  US-grown ingredients not only support local farmers, but also boast a much smaller carbon footprint than pet food that is imported from overseas.

Invest

One of the easiest green commitments a pet owner can make is to invest in high-quality products.  Pet accessories made with durable materials will last longer, and require little or no repair and replacement cost.  Such consumer-savvy purchases reduce the amount of discarded products in landfills.  For example, opt for stainless steel water and feeding dishes.  Plastic dishes can be easily chewed, scratched, and overgrown with bacteria, prompting multiple replacements.  Stainless steel is naturally resistant to bacteria, scratches, and even puppy jaws!

Going green is naturally satisfying, supporting both a happy pet and planet.  Even one small change with your pet can make a big difference.
